mmm, my father was a gyro pilot so that book is pretty meaningful for him. beautiful tale, it feels almost allegorical. Like the little prince or wind in the willows. I'd recommend "Have Space-suit Will Travel" it feels a little like a fusion of the two.
there's also a bit of a community inspired by hpmor. They call themselves "rational fiction". some faves: Time Braid & Mother of Learning. and the harry continuation fic Significant Digits is also not bad.
