almost all the metaphors we use when we talk about memes are based on disease they're viral, they're parasitic, they 'infect' minds curious what the convo would look like if we talked more about symbiotic memes. healthy collabs between ideas + people, like Nemo and his anemonepic.twitter.com/EJ8r14Et06

If you read
@DavidDeutschOxf's work (eg The Beginning of Infinity) he makes a really profound case for the historical memeplexes of humanity having been parasitic in a way that was detrimental to human well-being. And that new, symbiotic kinds of memes are possible now.1 reply 0 retweets 7 likes -

It's been one of the books that has affected my thinking most in the last few years, AND I want to note that I think it is limited in a few major ways so I wouldn't recommend just downloading his worldview. The stuff on memetic evolution seems solid tho.https://twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/status/1125440529628639237 …

Malcolm 🙃cean @Malcolm_OceanReplying to @Malcolm_Ocean @cognazor @KeenDisregardI don't think David disagrees factually with what I've said, but his treatment of it conveys a sense of "don't worry" that seems naïve to me. Naïve for two reasons: 1. we're still mid static→dynamic society transition 2. lack of understanding of complexity & nonlinear dynamics1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

thanks for the rec, I read it a few years back but should probably revisit with new eyes. I think I encountered it too early. funny how the books change as you do!

I would LOVE there to be more people who have read both Iain McGilchrist's book The Master and his Emissary, *and* David Deutsch's. Lots of core resonance, but nearly-completely opposition re: "what has happened to culture in the last 500 years?"https://twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/status/1136142122875273216 …

the master and his emissary has been sitting on my shelf for a couple of weeks. It feels very cultured. stem-kid me is intimidated by such a liberal serving of arts. swear I heard it ominously emitting Bach's tocotta and fugue yesterday.

Oh man, I had a heartfelt empathetic laughing with you, picturing that image! I've only read a bit of the book so far. I've listened to McGilchrist's ideas in a couple other formats -- more digestible chunks! http://www.metalearn.net/podcasts/ml41-iain-mcgilchrist …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFs9WO2B8uI …

And I've felt very connected with the way Sarah Peyton (
@empathybrain) weaves Iain McGilchrist's ideas into her work, which is more in the style of neuroscience and NVC and parts work as applied to self-help: https://www.yourresonantself.com/2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes
looks interesting, will try out her meditations.
