I'm also feeling some Guru Papers here, in the subtle ways we use power & control to regulate others behaviour, and in turn our emotions.
@Malcolm_Ocean probably knows more.
I feel like these dynamics are very much Kegan's stage 3 as I've a subagent wailing "but.. what if I hurt a family member".

It's a mess! Your insight "other people can't make me do things" is also only a stage in development. There's an important truth to it, *and* it could be used to justify cruelty: "if you were taking responsibility for your feelings, then you wouldn't be upset right now"

It has a similar property to the "upper limit problem" (ULP) which is "I'm only willing to let my life get so great before I'll sabotage it." Helpful for self-inquiry, but trying to tell someone else that this is what you think they're doing is almost always anti-helpful.pic.twitter.com/fcwHb3E5ub
