It's just another possible level of difficulty, to be able to manage your economy efficiently - it's then all about the programmers' ability to code properly. EE is not really a good example with its bad recoding being responsible for the problems (original didn't have them).
It's one of those 'lazy' workarounds I can totally see doing myself when creating a game, which makes the game even more likeable for me
