how about a server-side setting that enables viewers to see custom models but renders the default skin for anyone in-game? Win-win

I think that outside of a tournament it'd be no problem but for a competitive setting it kind of screws with visual identification, so removing them or changing them to have the exact same dimensions in terms of height/width is necessary I think!
