personally I think a great way to get into the genre is to play civ, because that game features aspects of every dimension i.e. it's super strong in breadth. So you can play it, see what parts you find most compelling, and then based on that pick a follow-up game.
but in general, it's a pretty accessible genre, so picking based on what seems interesting and has good reviews will probably take you pretty far as well. in other words, it's hard to go wrong if you read user reviews and look at the game score before purchasing.
