I think an underappreciated aspect of cheese is that it forces you to have a clear goal alongside a set of specific, pre-planned reactions. I think one of the hardest parts of playing macro is the uncertainty of what to do - when to move out, where, how much to commit, etc.

I like to think about it as reducing the problem space. I think the two concepts you mention are interwoven; it's easier to forget because the possibility tree is so much larger. When you factor in your opponent being forced into unfamiliar territory, it simplifies even further.

That said, I always play honorable, upstanding, macro play. And I don't know how to react to weird stuff so I lose those games :D
