I think both can be very valuable. Lining up timings of buildings and unit counts is super useful to find exact things to work on IMO.

yeah this is a really good point. unit counts always surprises me personally - just today I experimented against the AI with a "minor" deviation I had been putting into a build and found it set me back ~20 supply @ 8:00 without much tactical gain.

A combination of both seems the most logical solution, as pro replays set a certain benchmark one should use to gauge their own play

So that’s how you calculate how much your proxy 111 is supposed to have ?

Most people fall into improvement trap of doing weird or inefficient unit composition and macro builds because they do not understand how perfectly crisp high level is. A good benchmark is how fast you reach 66+ workers and max out with certain unit composition.
-
To clarify it means that they will come up with their own weaker interpretation of build orders and unit compositions to escape from the reality that their basic macro and micro skills are too weak to execute the build orders and play styles pros do. This often leads to whining.

I would argue they are different means to different ends. Studying your own gameplay from replays lets you see your mistakes but with full information and no pressure from time or execution. It gives you a very clear and objective display of your decisions and performance.

For micro mistakes/decisions, army movement, skillshot allignment and what have you, watching your own replays gives great insight as to what is going on. When your goal is not to improve/tidy up your own play, you can watch professional replays. These give you an insight in

Many people watch pro replays and that will show you what to do, but it won't show you what you're doing wrong. Too many people I've seen watch pros and say I need to be more active on the map, or have better timings or w/e. But won't notice that their macro is slipping ect.
