Had a little fun last week w/ this Q & subsequent answers. HOWEVER, the discussion prompted an actual Q for me that sits at the intersection of covenant theology & gender. Would love feedback (1)https://twitter.com/sometimesalight/status/1050772746836332545 …

So I've got a Q about the reformed baptist/Calvinistic aesthetic: I've got a lot of male friends who exist in that craft beer/beard/cigar/reformed theology space, but I find that very few reformed women have beards or smoke cigars. What gives?

How does covenant theology account for circumcision as an inherently gendered sign of the covenant transitioning into baptism which is not gendered?

I’ve long wondered that too! It seems to me the gendered notion of circumcision might/ought to be viewed as an indication of its limited nature. The fuller inclusion of the gospel/New Covenant requires a fuller signification of our immersive union with Christ.

That makes sense w/ Joel's words that the Spirit will be poured out on all flesh & sons & daughters will prophesy. That presents some interesting dilemmas for conservatives though.

Definitely worth further conversation: the baptism (of water and the spirit) - circumcision of the heart (Col 2) - you are ALL sons (male and female) baptized into Christ (Gal 3:26-29) threads are there.

Yes, I think there's definitely something going on & even as a baptist I can see that. But I'm curious about how this potentially reframes gender Qs for conservatives. If you accept the sublimation of circumcision to baptism, that's really significant for gender convos.

V curious to hear your further thoughts on this. Further qu: if “the mark of the Spirit” was a sign to early ch that the division between Jew and gentile (previously marked by circumcision) was broken down (acts 15:6-11), is there a similar division btw m&w erased by the Spirit?

No doubt reconciliation is (or should be) happening. So I think we can expect to see racial & gendered reconciliation progressing along similar vector. What *divisions* are being healed (vs. erased), I'm not yet prepared to say. I know it's not colorblindness & sexblindnesses

Erased wasn’t a good word. Healed much better. And a fuller understanding of our gendered, spirit-filled partnership in the gospel seems like the right vector to pursue.
