"The Darkness Where the Future Should Be" is important. We're hungry for a hopeful narrative about the future. The stories we are told shape how we feel and think, and right now those stories are almost all doom and gloom. There's a deficit of hope.

For some reason, I haven't been invited to Davos this year. Was it something I said? 🤔

This article presents a good argument for how we "can't get there from here" without relying on nuclear power, both existing and new technologies. The Tragedy of Germany’s Energy Experiment

Puppies aren’t separated from their moms until ~8 weeks. Less than that is thought of as harmful or abusive. One of the most common lengths of US paid family leave is ~6 weeks. So yes, when we “let the market decide”on parental leave, “the market” treats people worse than dogs.

When was the last time you experienced dark - real dark - with no human light, near or far? When did you last see the Milky Way? If you can’t remember perhaps it’s time to plan an excursion. Nothing “grounds” me more than time with the dark sky.

For robots to be useful in everyday environments we need to move away from painstakingly coding them to do specific, structured tasks in exactly the right way at the right time. You have to teach machines to perform helpful tasks; you cannot program them.
