I just had my birthday. I stayed in a hotel. I had food. I had drinks. I bought some clothes. I had FUN. But the button hoarding, bean counting fun suckers would carp that it’s another example of why I can’t buy a house.

The truth is: I don’t really want one. I don’t want the overheads or to be restricted in where I can move to. I don’t want to spend my weekends in B&Q, desperately fixing leaks like a drug addled submarine captain. I don’t want to talk about mortgages at every dinner party.

By the way, if you want to and can buy a house, all power to you. I think people should basically do what makes them happy as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.

Home ownership is a way of ensuring you can pay for your old age... as well as taxes they sell your home when you're at your most vulnerable.

that is changing in Germany too though. Buying (or building your own) is definitely much more of an ambition now. And rents for somewhere nice are much less affordable than they used to be. But yeah my god owning is hard work.

The Germans etc also have better pension schemes - or just a pension scheme - and do not have to rely on home ownership as a funding source for their eventual retirement.

Who do they rent from? Is is predominantly private owners or corporate?

I rent a council house and I love it, we've been here for several years so it feels very much like home. My gran rented from the council all her life and refused to buy as it's against her socialist ideals

My brother has been living contentedly in Berlin for 7 years now - to him and many of his friends, the idea that you "need" to buy a house is a completely baffling concept. I've often thought they have the right idea!

This works well because of rent controls though, doesn't it? Something I'm in favour of, I hasten to add.
