I've always wished I could be a good writer and I've read up on prose. F Scott Fitzgerald pisses me off. I could see someone using obviously pretentious word choices if they are trying to stretch their vocabulary. But they shouldn't try to use that in everyday discussion.

I read a thesaurus when I was a kiddo and picked out my favorite words. I usually mix both my layman’s and my snooty vocab together nowadays, but I used to be an asswipe about it.

There is nothing wrong with using large words, and using them to convey your point does make you appear competent. It’s the people who think it’s a flex that irritate me
