As someone who is not Jewish and never thought about this, it’s ridiculous that there isn’t time off or some sort of grace for missing class for these holidays.

The guy got suuuuper awkward and apologetic when I was like,
@BostonSchools not providing Jewish holidays off means my child has to miss class so we can observe. Backpedaled real quick.Prikaži ovu nitHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi

I live in South Florida and we get Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. We have a high percentage of Jewish staff, if not Jewish students and finding subs for so many teachers would be nearly impossible. I have to explain why we have the days off to my students, though. :)

I’m from south Florida and always had high holidays off growing up

I knew the Jewish holidays must be the reason even before I read your second paragraph. At least in NY kids (all kids) get off for Yom Kippur and I think the first day of Rosh Hashana.
-
yup, we got that off in south florida when I was growing up too!

Every year I fell below the attendance for medical reasons (pneumonia, bronchitis etc.—high school was rough). Every year me and my mom appealed on the basis of grades (As) and every year we won. Attendance policies are bullshit anyway. If she can keep up, none o’ your business.

I almost auto-failed a French class my senior year of high school because of absences and tardies (cross campus trek between classes) even though academically I was acing the class.

I lost 6% of my grade in every class every fall semester for “unexcused absences”. When my mom complained to the school board, they said if they made exception for Jewish holidays, “anyone could make up a holiday and demand an exception.”
-
This is sadly, sadly common, as is the idea that Jews will just "make up holidays" in order to get convenient excused absences. I encountered this in college. A lot. It was (and still is) disgusting.
