"Chesa has a radical approach that involves not charging crime in the first place." "And simply releasing individuals with no rehabilitation and putting them in positions where they are more likely to reoffend."

"The DA's office is equipped to provide those resources. But people are being given a free pass." "If both offices function where the only thing that matters is what's best for the person charged..." "That leaves the victim and public safety out to dry."

"There has to be balance between the two [offices], Right now what we're seeing is that public safety does not matter. And what a victim has experienced, it's being disregarded."

"If I would not simply agree to what was being requested of me, with respect to resolution by a Public Defender, that they were either expressly telling me that they would go directly to Chesa, or that was happening, where I would receive an email, with Chesa cc'd."

This last part seems to me like an ethical violation. If lawyers are being asked to work with one another from two sides of the system - the prosecutorial side, and the defense - and the defense side is going to the top of the prosecutor side...

.... isn't that a complete breakdown of the "checks and balances" element to the DA & Defense relationship?

If I am reading this right - this woman is supposed to be defending the victims, but if she isn't doing whatever the defense lawyers tell her to, they go to her boss directly. No wonder she's resigning. She can't do her job. That is a completely dysfunctional dynamic.

On why speaking out: "I've spent the last seven years of my career serving this city, the DA's office and its victims. I loved every bit of what I was doing. I'm not disgruntled. I'm not angry. It is simply what I believe is right and fair for this city and its residents."

@BigadShaban -- I think this piece would be stronger if you shared the opposing opinion too (e.g., lawyers who are happy to stay working at the DA's office).3 replies 0 retweets 7 likesShow this thread
To go against your "boss" who'll likely retaliate was gutsy enough for these two brave attorneys. @chesaboudin is negligent, reckless, and could care less about the safety of SF. He has his own agenda "prioritizing ideology and politics over the day-to-day handling of cases"
