Another common curriculum mistake I see is introducing ancillary / advanced topics during the intro phase. Typically comes from an SME (subject matter expert) over explaining Anytime I see “It’s ok if you don’t grasp this now” I wonder why I’m being introduced to it at all

Curse of knowledge: as someone ladders up their knowledge, the fundamentals become invisible & automatic. So when they become a teacher, they skip over them. Really hard to avoid 100% even if you’re aware of it until you have a feedback loop with student. Easy to improve though.

Yup - typically 1 pass through with a student / cohort shows this flaw. So hard to counter unless you know to look for it.

Makes me think that good curriculum is evolved, not designed - really hard to account for effects like this without testing it out (Phrase borrowed from https://lethain.com/good-process-is-evolved/ …)

Well put. I wonder what the result would be if course creators focused on evolution vs design. What would that look like?

I think there’s quantitative and qualitative design / user research, just like you’d use to optimize a landing page or other ux flow - mostly, you can’t write and ship a curriculum and call it “done” - it has to grow as students interact with it

This is what happens in practice - at least on the 5,000 person call center we ran it on. Another thing that becomes abundantly clear is the average input rate for the learner. I.e. 70 new facts per week or you see drop off.
