1/ The 'Roseanne' narrative has gotten out of control. Deadline: "Revival’s Huge Debut Stuns Hollywood, Prompts Soul-Searching" http://deadline.com/2018/03/roseanne-revival-huge-ratings-premiere-stuns-hollywood-prompts-soul-searching-1202354973/ …; NYT: Reboot sprang from ABC's heartland strategy after Trump's victoryhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/29/business/media/roseanne-ratings-trump.html …

2/ Roseanne averaged 18M viewers from 1988-1996, at a time where the average viewer watched 1/3 episodes. The total fan-base was probably 40M. In 1990, it was the biggest show on TV It is no surprise that with this base + press attention audiences turned up. That was the point

3/ It's easy to say Roseanne reaches under-served, middle of the country Trump voters, but does anyone believe that a Seinfeld, Cosby Show (ceteris paribus), Friends, Cheers, Frasier reboot wouldn't score as well if not higher?

4/ In which case the narrative would be "audiences today want shows about [entitled but discontent middle class New Yorkers / upper middle class African Americans / Care free urban yuppies in love etc.]"

5/ Roseanne was greenlit, like other reboots, because it is existing IP that markets itself and has an existing base of awareness and, more importantly, fans. Like the film industry, TV has moved to sequels because it has become impossible to launch new concepts to similar #s

6/ This doesn't mean Hollywood hasn't historically overlooked blue collar, heartland viewers (it has), or Roseanne didn't overperform (it did). But Roseanne was a differentiated, lauded, sitcom with a huge following. That's why it's back, not to fill a cultural gap

7/ You also don't bank premiere ratings. Will & Grace reboot premiered to 10M (v. Roseanne's 18M), dropped to 7MM on Episode 2 and fell below 4M at 13. As it moves from an event premiere + press darling, the need to watch (esp live) will diminish and ratings will cool.

Per above, Roseanne fell 44% from the premiere to its seventh/final episode. Still huge, but 18MM only rewrites the TV narrative if it's stable - Big Bang Theory has been beating 10MM for years. And Roseanne's S9 was only 8 episodes - a third of S1-8 (and BBT) CC @brianstelterpic.twitter.com/SttkkiYTIM

I've been thinking about this today too. The decline hasn't gotten enough attention vs the initial hype...

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but this must mean Trump voters have halved, both chambers will go blue in November and segmentation strategy is a lie. Just trying to be narrative consistent. Or maybe IP, press coverage, quality and premieres matter, as they always have.

That said, Romney told us to ignore 47% so maybe Trump has led to marginal but significant gains.

a show has a couple of characters who are not anti-Trump (not the entire cast) and the media goes into panic must find something to criticize mode. says more about the media than the show itself.
