Why doesn't the dinner make more effort to advance the cause of journalism rather than to grab headlines for whatever the comedian they invite says?

Having a comedian, a fancy dinner and pretending things are normal may just be out of touch with the reality of this treacherous time. Our democracy is at stake. This is reality.https://twitter.com/bri_sacks/status/990395510124154881?s=19 …

How can the media defend against Trump’s attacks on the first amendment when many in the media won’t defend 1st amendment rights of a comedian?
-
Which part of the first amendment is Trump trying to arrest people for and who is calling for the fine or arrest of comedians?

Any concerns that this event, with all its parties and whatnot, contributes to the negative perceptions of journalism outside the Beltway?

Why doesn't the press call a lie a lie? They seem to say "false statement", or "statement doesn't match the facts". Yes, it is a bigger burden to prove the subject is purposely lying, but isn't that why we have the press - to find out the actual truth in the person's intention?

Was the attacks by the so called comedian pre-approved. These were hurtful, vicious and I have looked and looked for jokes in there, but found none. Was Sarah sat up? Payback?

What do you tell people who clutch pearls at a *roast* of one of the most insulting, insensitive, and poorly informed presidents of our time?

The SHS outrage is a misdirection of the greater criticism of the media’s duality with both trump’s rise to power and the profit making motive of his normalization. It seems like there should be introspection about whether the media created him, or just reported about him.
-
Also, is it ethical for a reporter to defend what is now clearly a favorite source from political satire? This seems to be a very blurred line. If SHS isn’t a close source, she sure looks like one now.

Not a comment, but definitely an observation. This is *A CHARITY FUNCTION FOR A CHARITABLE CAUSE.* In such a hyperpartisan world, can't we (collective we) come up with a better way to do this?

I’ve always admired journalists who won’t let an interview go past a lie. It may be excruciating -and I’ve seen some beauts on Brit TV- but it does work wonders. Don’t you think its time for this technique to be adopted here?
