Sure, what the president says is newsworthy -- but 75 minutes of live coverage while he bloviates, insults and makes false statements? No way. My column herehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/live-coverage-of-a-pennsylvania-rally-was-another-free-ad-for-trumps-favorite-candidate-himself/2018/03/13/e27e46de-26b4-11e8-874b-d517e912f125_story.html?utm_term=.a98bca93bc34 …

Trump’s speeches are not presidential. You cover them because it’s infotainment. Same reason you have Kellyanne Conway on as a Reliable Source. You know what you’re doing, and you don’t care.
-
He's the president. I think your issue is with that fact, not with the news media. Presidential events are news
-
It's not a Presidential event, it's a partisan political performance, like street theater, your network covers it for the outrage and ratings. It has damaged our country.
-
It would be interesting to list all of the Presidential speeches of Bush, Obama and Trump and list the amount of live time and commentary that CNN has given to them. An interesting pattern might appear. Let's see if CNN makes that info easy to access...

Brian I used to work for CBS. I was mortified at cable news coverage of Trump during the election. There was no real investigation into his fraudulent business history (outside of NYT & WAPO). No adherence to fair political coverage of all candidates - camera was always on Trump.
-
@brianstelter does say broadcast coverage has been different between POTUS 44 and (alleged) 45, but I think the#trainwreck soundbites are what's fueling the frenzy:https://twitter.com/metaquest/status/973201952594018305 … -
Believe me, I get it. I worked in NY News & watched Trump manipulate the media for 20 yrs. He’s playing the same game he always has & the media is jumping just like they always did.

I’d hoped CNN & MSNBC would learn from mistakes they made during the election. There’s no reason to broadcast an entire campaign rally - cable news is just giving him more free promotion. I know this administration is a disaster & tough to cover but pls stop feeding this
show. -
Exactly! Here's an idea: instead of giving Trump what he wants –– a warmed-up crowd and a hot mic with a camera pointing right at him –– how about sending reporters to observe, record, and REPORT the news instead of letting Trump define what is newsworthy? That might work.

I would love to know Ted Turner's opinion of what CNN has turned into. I bet he's sad, mad & disgusted.

So there are different types of Presidents therefore they get different coverage? You air Trump for ratings. His rallies are not Presidential. He’s not signing a treaty, or making important announcements. You did not cover Bush or Obama like this. Admit it: you do it for ratings.

Of course he's different, he's a showman. But he is also a compulsive liar, ignoramus, bigot misogynist racist who is on a quest to dismantle the US government, deconstructing our democracy under Putin's orders. You are complicit giving him free advertising.

This is pathetic rationalization. He’s just vaguely “different,” which means he gets constant uninterrupted airtime.

Yeah, this guy is a cancer on our nation. You're helping it to metastasize. Shame on you.

Just because you can broadcast live doesn't mean you should. Trump's like a cop car chase. I'll say it again:
@GeorgeLakoff . Trump coverage needs to be edited, put in Trump segments & other news covered in between.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

And ratings! Just like Trump.

“so there are definitely differences in the coverage” - basically admitting to normalizing trump. Who made the rule that there should be exceptions for trump? That’s how we got here. Thanks media.

So what are the specific differences about Trump vs B or O that require news orgs to carry all of his speeches live in full unlike theirs?

I think presidential speeches are news events that should be shown live, but I understand the criticism and I wrestle with it myself.
