Sure, what the president says is newsworthy -- but 75 minutes of live coverage while he bloviates, insults and makes false statements? No way. My column herehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/live-coverage-of-a-pennsylvania-rally-was-another-free-ad-for-trumps-favorite-candidate-himself/2018/03/13/e27e46de-26b4-11e8-874b-d517e912f125_story.html?utm_term=.a98bca93bc34 …

Just checked @brianstelter timeline & disappointed, but not surprised, that he's made no mention of your great column. He turned @ReliableSources into The Trump Show the month Trump got nomination when good media criticism is needed more than ever.

Emm, thanks for kind words. I have to disagree re: @brianstelter. I think he does a great job and handles matters regarding his employer with courage. (And though this is *not* the barometer of anything, he often links to, tweets out, or mentions my columns.)

I used to follow him & why I checked to see if he had done it today on this subject which went to the heart of the 3 yr long TV news failure covering Trump. He's goes up to the edge of these CNNcentric issues, but can't quite jump in.

Thanks to this convo, I saw Margaret's column, so thank you for that 😀 I think presidential speeches are news events that should be shown live, but I understand the criticism and I wrestle with it myself.

I retired in 2007 & cable news is on when I'm home. I know how insanely different CNN & MSNBC coverage of Trump WH has been from Bush & Obama. It's hurting the country & no one in TV news cares. @GeorgeLakoff ideas need to be taken a little to heart.

Trump’s speeches are not presidential. You cover them because it’s infotainment. Same reason you have Kellyanne Conway on as a Reliable Source. You know what you’re doing, and you don’t care.

It's not a Presidential event, it's a partisan political performance, like street theater, your network covers it for the outrage and ratings. It has damaged our country.

It would be interesting to list all of the Presidential speeches of Bush, Obama and Trump and list the amount of live time and commentary that CNN has given to them. An interesting pattern might appear. Let's see if CNN makes that info easy to access...😏

You're not "covering" something by simply running it live. You "cover" something by extracting the important elements + quotes, providing context for his/her comments and some assessments of their validity. Basic journalism.

That may be what you do on your Sunday show, but that isn't what CNN and MSNBC do the rest of the week and is kind of the problem that we're talking about. I mean, y'all cut to a photo op of Don Jr eating ice cream where he insulted dems and lied unchallenged. How is that news?

Exactly. The president speaking on presidential matters may be newsworthy, but we don’t need a live feed of his campaign rallies. It may be fair to report he was at a rally, or spoke at a rally. Other than that, I can see challenging something he said, but in post.

Campaign speeches are propaganda and should be covered by excerpting the key quotes and presenting them with fact checking. Should apply to all presidents but especially to this pro grifter.

Margaret's correct. You can report newsworthy parts. Airing entire speeches makes it seem @CNN just about ratings/profits. Your job not to do ``good TV.'' It's to provide viewers w/news they need to be informed citizens. So many stories underreported b/c of wall-to-wall Trump.
