For whatever reason, they're more comfortable believing that there are massive conspiracies, than they are believing there are random tragedies. It's... a defense mechanism, maybe? Extreme denial?

Maybe. Certainly some of them. But whatever influences some of them some of the time, there must be an underlying commonality, or conspiracy theories wouldn't be so... common. Or so persistent.

Good! There needs to be consequences for harassing people based on conspiracy theories that an event was a "hoax," and that people involved in it were either crisis actors, are living secret lives elsewhere in a protection program, or never existed at all.
