a few thoughts on this: quantity is not the same as quality; i regularly point out fox's ratings strength; they've cornered a very specific market; however, the cable news race is all about the 25-54 demo, and in the demo, the race is much closer than you suggested

Fox typically dominates the demo, too, but you already knew that.

CNN is especially WEAK, not strong, in the 25-54 demo: Fox dominates, while CNN has only three shows in the top 20pic.twitter.com/y5ohBBeYVg

Fox on Friday: 271k in the demo at any given time from 3am to 3am. CNN: 239k. MSNBC: 237k. That's the most recent day I have data for. That's the point I'm making -- the race is all about the demo. Good talk!

Really, anecdotal rating for one day, a Friday which tend to be nonstandard to begin with, and a night where Fox’s biggest ratings grabber wasn’t on? You think that says more than the entire month of February? Sounds suspiciously like #FakeNews but I’m too polite to say so.

I'm not here to debate you. The point -- which I've made repeatedly -- is that the demo race is what matters. And it's closer than some people claim. A program ranker is not the best way to understand 24/7 cable news trends.

Perhaps not, but it’s better than selecting the one night Hannity (#1 show on cable) takes off and then using that to claim it represents how ‘close’ CNN is to FNC. As a guy who worked for both CNN and FNC was fond of saying: I was born at night, but not last night.

I don't know if Hannity was on or off Friday. What I know is that people who fixate on total viewers miss the business story. Like I said: Fox is a skyscraper. Every media reporter knows that. This Twitter chat doesn't really have a point!

LOL. I think we agree that both the demo and total viewers matters. The biz and thus the corporate battle is all about the demo. My view is that the demo race is closer than you seem to think. The end!

The demo (which fox is winning) only matters to advertisers. The average person doesn't care about the demo... Your point was an attempt to trick people into thinking CNN is closer than it is.

This is a very interesting post about why focusing on the demo may be misplaced when you’re talking about cable news. There’s a big difference in voting patterns: http://dailyhowler.blogspot.com/2017/06/new-york-times-reports-cable-news.html …pic.twitter.com/VJFDfQF4BD

Try not being fake news that ignores all democrat scandals, pushes all Republican scandals, then maybe people would trust you. .... Well too late, IMO CNN flushed their credibility down the toilet when they tried to make Obama's IRS scandal into a nothingburger.
