A TV exec said to me last night: "The problem is all these movies are small"https://twitter.com/andrewkirell/status/970691022169825281 …

To follow up on this: “The Oscars rated poorly because of liberal politics” is an incredibly dumb, lazy take—especially if you’re a "media writer.” There were no mega-blockbusters in the top category. This happens every time.

Millions of Americans haven't seen a single movie in a movie theater in the past year. Don't care period.

Get Out made over $250 million. Not a mega-blockbuster, but to say it's a "small" movie is just not accurate.

The Shape of Water, Get Out, Dunkirk all made big money. In fact The Shape of Water in fact is the highest grossing BP winner in 5 years. It's because of the liberal preaching that people aren't watching, but keep making excuses.

That's BS. The problem his no one wants to tune into a GOP bash fest. That's reality as these shows have gotten more and more partisan the ratings have dropped significantly.

No this one wasn't, they announced before hand it wouldn't. But people expect it to be so they don't turn it on. All other award shows have been so why would people think this one would be different?

I couldn't watch the Oscars in the '90s because my dad wouldn't shut up about how liberal and political it was. HINT the arts have always been liberal.

Yes that's a factor, but also people are watching less broadcast in general. Even NFL viewership is down. It's all about that streaming tho....

It's probably a combination of reasons. It's interesting that people watch movies in record numbers with the same celebrities starring in them who they claim later to despise.
