No, @brianstelter. The only teachable aspect of a journalistic error for readers is to trust us less. That's it.pic.twitter.com/m4l7bnKkEz

you can't assign teachable moments to consumers, Brian! They're not students.
Agreed. No one’s “assigning.” But some (not all) readers and viewers do learn when we’re transparent and forthright about our reporting.
That's true. But that's not what happened in this case. Bernstein and Frum offered apologia for CNN's errors, essentially praising it.
I called it a “black eye” for CNN and discussed the editorial standards process re: anonymous source use.pic.twitter.com/2rr5aQ6Ggh
that's nice, but it's not the takeaway from the show. The takeaways were Bernstein praising "our" achievements and Frum saying the errors are signs of quality.
please explain to me what on earth you think this is a response to.
Corrections are obviously critical. People respect apologies. But making the mistake in the first place helps credibility? That’s ridiculous.
Errors chip away at trust. Errors that tilt in a clear direction chip away at integrity. Correcting errors is important but is a minimum requirement. The need for speed is hurting us all, news orgs and readership both.
CNN owes us more of an explanation. Did the sources lie? If so who were they ? If not why treated credible?
I illustrated my own correction today. Gotta do it where the readers will find it, too.pic.twitter.com/Z4IsjMch3S
It was on this page, Brian. A weekly Browns feature:pic.twitter.com/da0ilFlvGG
I still don’t fully understand how this error happened and I’m hoping CNN will offer more explanation.
When a name is misspelled or a person misidentified in a photo?Entirely different than this "error".You know it!
I agree with @jpodhoretz. When all the errors go one way it’s no accident. After the fact corrections too little too late. Media ruining its own credibility.
This wasn’t a correction thought. It was getting the story entirely wrong.
