        This is splitting hairs saying Sandy wasn't a major hurricane. Living on the South Shore of Long Island I can assure you it was major.

        It was a cat 3 when it first hit but as it moved further it turned to a cat 1

        It was a Category 1 by the time it made landfall in the U.S., so didn't reach the designation of Major.

        It brushed NE Florida as a Cat 3, but I suppose that doesn't count, despite the destruction.

        From the article : A "major hurricane" is defined as category 3 or higher. Sandy was the equivalent of a category 1...

        I lived in NJ during Sandy. It was pretty scary. It went around me and there was destruction everywhere.
