Certain propositions draw almost universal assent in press culture so acculturated speakers use them whether they apply or not

A good example would be "You are not the story." One can always get an amen for that, doesn't matter if anyone said "you" are.

To me as an observer it's interesting how many of these unanimous sentiments involve being stoic in some way.

they are not alone by a long shot & they also do good reporting, should leave Op-Ed to others
