Here's the thing: The caravan crystallizes long-term trends in the demographics and policy incentives of migration in NorTri/MX/US. Most people didn't understand those trends. This has been opportunity to educate them. And it's pronounced TREMENDOUS journalism doing just that.https://twitter.com/JamesFallows/status/1058839516092477440 …

@NickMiroff's piece on the policy could have been written any time in the last 4 years. But it wouldn't have gotten the attention it got and very much deserved.https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/border-asylum-claims/?utm_term=.197f1ca5e59e …3 replies 14 retweets 80 likesShow this thread -

@nytimes reporters spent a day answering reader questions about the caravan, to turn a migration journey that is often so stereotyped as to seem unreal into something accessible to readers 1000s of miles away.3 replies 7 retweets 44 likesShow this thread -
I've been covering Trump's border crackdown since week 1 of his term. And I can tell you two things: 1) Both the spring caravan and this one inspired policy crackdowns because of _Trump's_ fixation, not public's. 2) It takes news hooks for public to pay attn to ongoing policies.

So, yes, obvi there are crappy ways to cover this or any story. But the idea that this is somehow a vapor story, a molehill turned into a mountain by the likes of the Post, is infuriating to me as someone who wants people to care about this issue.

I look forward to everyone in my mentions complaining about "most" of the coverage being in bad faith continuing to read my articles about Trump's asylum crackdown even when no one in the admin is talking about it. Imo its more of a format issue. TV brings visuals and 'hot take' punditry which is mostly terrible and misleading. The newspapers and newssites by in large deliver a lot more value in a complex story like the caravan. It seems hard for most people to seperate the coverage by type

I absolutely agree with that. I was really pleased that I got to explicitly talk about that _on TV_ with
@brianstelter last month. The b-roll has driven so much attention.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes
