The internet is a tool. How we use it is our responsibility. Everyone has the responsibility to assess the credibility & weight of the material we read/hear. Public education has duty to teach how to do this. Adults must learn on their own. We don’t check intelligence at keyboard

Agree but we're at a pivotal point in the internets life where there is still a large group of people who have lived the majority of their years without it. They believe it's all real. I'm 38. 50% of my life with it. 50% without it. I watched it become a wasteland.

I’m old enough to be your mom. But I know to think critically. I think that’s the issue. Why should anyone have assumed that what’s kind must be true when we know that’s what’s in print is not always so? The task remains the same. The problem: poor public education

And at the same time I agree that the authors & distributors of infuriation online bear the responsibility to fact-check before publishing. Those who lie might be held accountable or not depending on their legal responsibilities. We must teach our children well

As an early developer I can tell you it wasn't supposed to be like this. It wasn't supposed to be like this. But then DISRUPT! and it became all about financial capital. It can be saved. By localizing it. Giving people more control as their own webmasters.https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1057499658799538177 …

Step 1 is to end anonymity. You should have to provide ID & use a real name on social networking sites. That simple act of accountability would reduce harassment & make it harder to spread disinfo.

Ironic that you lament it's current state. The dream is still there, but tech companies are doing all they can to stifle free thought and free speech while their cohorts (you) in the #FakeNews media gaslight and provide cover. We see you. Your power is waning, and it scares you.

I remember my first newsgroup chat. It was in 1987? Our organization reached a group in Sweden who were giving us advice on how to spend a peace dividend if the Cold War ever ended. They had turned a munitions factory into a bicycle factory.

Bruni should look away from http://MSNBC.com  and its ilk and expand his mind. Expanded knowledge is out there if you’re ambitious and enterprising enough to seek it.

The comments here only prove this further. #1 rule should be validating accounts. No more hiding. If you want to spew hate let’s see who you are, no bots or fake accounts. That would help a lot. I don’t mind disagreeing with a fellow person if they are real.
