The founders had no concept of “the press” as we use the word today, as a specific class/profession, so saying they felt strongly about it is simply untrue. That use didn’t even exist til the 1920’s.

What they felt strongly about was free speech, whether verbal or written. Freedom of “the press” meant literally *any citizen* can print what they want on a printing press. They were not carving out a special class of especially protected truth tellers. Quite the contrary.

TFW when you are so historically ignorant that you think that full-time journalism existed as a profession in 1791.

Some folks sure do love their self-serving, anachronistic bullshit.

Bitterly clinging to their own manufactured hagiography.

It’s the same foolishness that pervades “separation of church and state,” which is actually worse on some level.

The paper desperately needs new leadership.

Baquet has to go. That he can still be there shows the problem goes even further up. Sulzberger is a poor steward for such an important institution.

this is a dumb and anti-historical view. They believed (except for Adams) that the government couldn't shut down the press. They didn't believe in a separate priesthood of journalists.

I sure wish we had an independent press. Sounds like a great idea.

It would be nice if America had an independent press. But we don't, do we, Tater?

and when Sunday shows "balance" out the NYT and Washington Post with RedState or something they play to the idea that NYT is some liberal publication when it is not that. Something that should be covered more. Look at MTP Daily guests sometimes, it's faux balance.
