The thing I keep trying to explain about 'both sides' is that it's a PLEASURE for those who pretend to it. A little hit of dopamine. For a moment you are lifted above the struggling — and slightly pathetic — partisans grasping for temporary advantage on the arena's grimy floor.https://twitter.com/ron_fournier/status/1055999479474618368 …

Do you think this is untrue? "Neither side appreciates—neither side credits—the anxiety the other side legitimately feels." Confession: I believe it.

Do I think it's untrue? I think the 'both sides' discourse, of which this is a variant, is poisoned at its source. It misleads, even when it generates propositions that might from a sufficient distance be kind of true. By now, no good can come from it— including no good insight.

Analogies are not the only analytic available to understand multiple perspectives. In this moment, a critical analysis of how power is exercised needs to be included for any of this to yield an insight that’s productive and generative.

One side’s fears are legitimate (for example: just this week the Trump DOJ reiterated its belief that fed. nondiscrimination laws don’t protect people like me). The other thinks that MS13 members are going to steal their Minnesota lake house.

This is 100% true, but I also don’t think either side understands the anxieties of the non-voters. People who, rightly or wrongly, don’t think their lives can be improved by anyone.

Or they’re just complacent or don’t pay attention to what’s happening in the government. I think that makes up the overwhelming majority of non-voters.

I’m just much more interested in finding out why they don’t vote, while I have no interest in figuring out why Trump voters support Trump, because o already know that it’s racism/hating poor people/hating other minorities.

Sure, and that’s important. But I think it’s also important to be realistic that most people who don’t vote probably just don’t care or aren’t clued into politics. But, of non-voters, I’m mostly concerned with people who want to vote, but can’t be of voter suppression efforts.

This both sides is lazy, because the contrast are stilted and poor. Not fact based. Fournier like others have made a career of it. Insinuation without evidence based on something he did 20 years ago. It’s killing your industry. Good news can be done with truth and evidence
