I totally don't understand this tweet. It's fine to show where the caravan is, but seems much more important to put front and center why people are in this caravan, what conditions are like in the countries they're leaving, and why they believe they deserve asylum.https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1054753355237478400 …

If your news coverage of the caravan doesn't include a map like this, front and center, you're doing it wrong... pic.twitter.com/s026JJYoov

I agree. This was a suggestion for one small addition to the coverage, not the end all be all!

There's something else that bothers me about the tweet/sentiment: Of course a map makes sense, but your urgency to include it sort of implies that news orgs should be pushing the "look how they are closing in on us!" mantra of the right. I know that isn't what you mean, but...

I think the point of the map is...they aren't anywhere near the US. Some economic refugees are walking together, hundreds of miles away from your Congressional district. Go vote as if it is completely irrelevant.

But I don't get this argument. They will eventually be near the U.S. In fact, they eventually will be right at the US border, asking for asylum. Why is where they are now (as opposed to where they'll be a month from now) relevant either way?

I see yr point, but this is being framed as imminent invasion by the other. And the "truthiness" (read: lie-y-ness) of pics of a bunch of migrants trekking toward us--but actually miles & miles from the US--as a way to drive xenophobic voter engagement deserves to be called out.

I'm all in favor of calling out the attacks on the caravan as xenophobic. I'd also be in favor of that if the caravan were 80 miles from San Ysidro instead of 2200 miles away.

It's needed because unless you are paying very close attention, one gets the impression that there is a swarm of invaders *at the Texas border.* It's a vital point that no one else has highlighted.

I like it actually as a 🇨🇦 that doesn't watch Fox News it strikes me as utterly absurd. The first thing I thought of was the same map yesterday showing the approaching hurricane. Dem vs Rep political stances towards Latin America could be insightful too.

Why are they not seeking asylum in the 1st country they entered (Mexico). Who is funding this. Important questions. Why are you not asking them?

Cover the truth about the caravan more than trumps reaction. Cover a wider range of reactions than Trumpism. Call out truth first, then lies.

By the way "Trump says" may belong in the lies category not the lead. Stories about Trump deceptions are a different story than stories about the caravan unless you choose to make it the same. Differentiate.
