Yeah, we kinda expected professional journalists to be able to have seen through and handled that clever trick years ago though.

Professional journalists created the, "some say" trope. It's literally everywhere and has been for decades. And every time it's used, I know it's a tool, not a fact. The next time your media source says, "unnamed" or "anonymous" it is the equivalent of "some say". Calumny.
-
You're wrong to conflate 'anonymous sources', or 'senior advisor' with 'some say'. Very big difference.
-
No, I am not wrong. Until sources are disclosed, one must assume it to questionable. It's as easy to lie about sources as it is to say, "some say." If one presumes the reporter has no reason to lie, one remains only partially informed.
-
There is a HUGE difference between a news publication with journalistic & editorial standards and ethics having a known source say something off the record, corroborated independently usually three times and trump outright making shit up.
-
Your skepticism should be applied evenly across all areas of information. It will afford you a more complete education.
-
Oh, it is. I am, for example, very skeptical of those who would like to see there be no authority on the truth and an effective dissolution of the fourth estate. A little bit of history helps inform me as to who would want that - and why.

Glad he was able to clarify that the "they" in question were in fact people.

And that should be asked every single time.

I would have loved to see her push harder on that or any number of other deflected questions. Are there journalistic rules or norms that refrain that? He just gets away with the same BS time after time while responding with the same catalog of 20 or so “best words”.

COURIC: Iwas curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this ?.. PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media — COURIC: But what ones specifically? I’m curious. PALIN: Um, all of them.

The fact that one competent intvu is a big deal continues to make me very dispirited for our profession. This kind of follow up q is journalism 101. What the hell has media been thinking/hiring for the last two years?
