Earlier today I asked the NYT: Does the agreement to protect the official's identity apply only to the opinion pages, or to the entire paper? Is the newsroom free to ferret out the source? NYT won't say. "We're not going to get into details of our agreement about anonymity."

If David Carr was still with us — and inside the NYT — I suspect he’d be doggedly asking a long list of questions like yours, and making it a personal quest to unmask the senior official.

David Carr is greatly missed during times like these.

So true, Rob, The masses have no idea of the nuance, but the insiders at NYT are wiping their brows that David won’t be applying his unique, driven inquiry into all of this. David would probably recoil at any notion of an anonymous op-ed, which would likely provoke his reporting!

Absolutely not, Brian. Surprised that youd even ask the question. The who is not unimportant, but the what is far, far more important and consequential. OTR, especially one as unprecedented as this, binds an ENTIRE publication, not a part of it.

What I am hoping, Brian is that the NYT does not release the name of the anonymous person that had written the Op-Ed. I hope in good conscience that they don't do this. What good will come of it?

Good questions Brian. The ethics around this, as well as the editorial process, will make a great topic Sunday.

Anonymous means worthless BS. The Woodward book is only helpful if you have an outhouse. The NYTimes can't be believed or trusted anyway. So Anonymous sources means one of their columnists, in a columnist style, wrote the damn thing.

Why don't you and @CNN just sue them for the names of the source and then doxx them on live TV? Send a news crew to their kids school. Camp out outside their house and scream at the neighbors? You tried with the Manafort jurors...why have scruples now?
