I’d love to see Brian explore a very important, usually overlooked aspect of our current media environment—the gradual death of foreign news and the gaping hole in coverage left by the complete unsustainability of freelance journalismhttps://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1028657875944501251?s=21 …

I’ll definitely try to find that episode. It’s something I think is easy to miss outside of the foreign correspondent world but I feel like it’s definitely contributing to the fake news phenomenon, just with foreign news. Conspiracy theories around Syria are a good example.

Widespread ignorance of foreign affairs is certainly creating an environment in which our government can make destructive foreign policy without accountability. The press can’t be a watchdog if there aren’t enough dogs, so to speak. We’re seeing the results of that every day.

Anyway I believe it’s worth exploring and there is an appetite for it. People are fatigued from Trump coverage. I often hear that they would like to see more foreign coverage in the news. I know it’s not a super sexy topic but very important from a sociological perspective.

Absolutely correct.
