We are not "a few steps from The Handmaids Tale." I don't think this kind of fear-mongering helps anybody. https://twitter.com/Amy_Siskind/status/1011423623788318734 …

I’d say that politicians citing the Bible as an outline for limiting women’s reproductive choices is definitely a small step towards Gilead. Gileads evolve incrementally, not overnight.
-
Our political climate right now feels oppressive. Limiting. Anti-female, anti-diverse. The tone set by republicans sets itself up for comparison to a Gilead-like dystopia.

Note what he left out of his resume. He left out, "I'm a white man, so please allow me to politely mansplain why all you women are wrong on topic."

OK well when you are ready to interview ppl working on reproductive justice issues in red states like Mississippi-like me let me know. Those ppl don't work on the show sir. Maybe you should recognize you are out of your depth.

Maybe less time talking to TV critics, and more time talking to the people working at clinics. Or, idk, someone well-versed in what creeping fascism looks like. Kendzior would likely back up Amy, here, and she knows this stuff better than you do.

Gilead is probably not a perfect illustration in that the culture depicted is...weird... BUT it serves as a handy stand in for fascistic dystopia in general. To revert to the German comparison, Nazi Germany wasn't "NAZI GERMANY" until it was too late to prevent it.
-
far better, I think, to say "be very vigilant because things are looking grim" than to say "I'm sure it will be fine" - metaphors like Gilead help make that point.

I’m a woman! Let me tell you why it feels like a Handmaid’s Tale EVERY DMN DAY!

A compelling aspect of The Handmaid's Tale is the flashbacks showing how much America wasn't Gilead right up until it was Gilead. It's a cautionary tale. The press is now "the enemy of the American people." Do we know how many steps lie between that and Gilead's Boston Globe?

Tv producers and critics??? Any political historians?
-
Exactly! Anyone familiar with the rise and fall of the Roman Empire? Norms being broken every day? Freedoms taken away inch by inch? Once norms are broken, it's difficult/impossible to go back. I don't have much faith in the opinions of "tv producers and critics."

Brian, you're so lost in semantics here. "A few" is subjective. Women probably feel we're a lot closer to Gilead than men do. But, even leaving that aside, there's no denying we are objectively closer to a Gilead state of affairs than we were 2 years ago, which is the real point.

THT is an allegory, not a documentary. People aren’t being shot in the streets—wait they are. People aren’t having their children taken away. Oops. Women are still able to have abortions—very limited. It is here. It just doesn’t look like you think it shouldn’t. Read the book.

Handmaid’s Tale is resonating because people watch it and already see we’re steps away from that reality. You and your colleagues slept on the most compelling primary in the country and are scrambling to catch up. Stop talking to tv producers and get out more, Brian. It’ll help.
