"While Miller's comments were on the record, we realized that the ground rules for the original interview were not clear, and so we made a decision not to run the audio."https://twitter.com/NYTimesPR/status/1009104308988674048 …

"The ground rules"? Give me a break. He's a WH employee and therefore a public servant. He works for us and he gave an interview. Run it. That's the ground rules.

People are making too much out of this. Reporters use recorders during on the record convos. In NYT’s explanation, “ground rules” were not established. If they didn’t say “we’re going to use this audio,” then NYT is correct in honoring request. But - a transcript is needed.

Riiiiight. In other words, the “hissing” of Miller didn’t make him appear friendly because he didn’t hide the bile and disdain in his voice.

I’ve taught journalism ethics. Unless there was some apriori agreement that the audio was only be used for verifying quotes and not for broadcast, the NYT would have been well within their rights to air it.
