"This report is based on a survey, with potentially huge margins of error, it should be treated cautiously. 5 other studies, based on preliminary death certificate data, have all come up with much lower numbers – about 1,000." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2018/06/02/did-4645-people-die-in-hurricane-maria-nope/ … But @CNN said it was 5,000...pic.twitter.com/HfkLZFwCgh

You're going to have to do better than that. The coverage has clearly labeled the Harvard study as an estimate. My advice: lay off the Twitter for a bit. It's not real life!

So why did you go with the highest number possible if you know you may be way off? Why not title "PR death estimated between 1,000-5,000". ?

Harvard study estimated 4645 with a 95% confidence interval 793-8498. The adjustment of this estimate based on survivor bias & household size distribution was 5740 with a 95% confidence interval 1506-9889. Thus, the highest possible is 9889, ~2x CNN's #. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa1803972 …pic.twitter.com/eWt5uDAkQl

Furthermore, in the Reliable Sources tweet, the attribution of 5000 hurricane-related deaths in Puerto Rico was to a statement that Maria Cardona, a CNN political contributor, made and was NOT cited as the official position or finding of CNN.

So, there are two concerns about your tweet. 1. The highest possible estimate is almost twice that as stated by CNN contributor Maria Cordona 2. The 5000 number was never cited by CNN itself to be the official estimate of or backed by CNN

I didn't say it was. I said it was cited, its methodology & weaknesses thereof were not explained, the actual death certificate count wasn't given & the only quibble with the number was the idea that it could/should be much higher. Very 1-sided. See Wapo fact check. Thanks.

We didn't see much mention of the problematic methodology, or its outlier status against actual counts. Saying it's an "estimate" without explaining why that raises questions about its claimed results, then going on to accept it as valid, misleads viewers. It's a lie of omission.

          1. You said that 5000 was the # that CNN gave. You did NOT qualify your statement to say that it was stated as an estimate. 2. The figure of 5000 was NOT given as CNN's official estimate or position. It was contained in an opinion articulated by Maria Cordova, a CNN contributor.

Media focused on 5000 but it’s not an estimate. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2018/jun/05/fact-checking-death-toll-estimates-hurricane-maria/ … "Note that according to the study the true number of deaths due to Maria can be any number between 793 and 8,498: 4,645 is not more likely than any other value in the range," Rivera said.

If it's just an estimate why do you keep pushing the 4500-5000 figure, but always "forget" to mention the range starts at below 1,000?

They also forget that the top of that range is 8,498 deaths. So yeah, you are correct. At the low end, hundreds of American's died, and we as a country were negligent. That is completely unacceptable any way you look at it.

It is unacceptable, but the flawed Harvard study is hardly the only estimate out there. And of course "nonpartisan" journos like Brian like to "forget" to mention the culpability that the Puerto Rican government shares with the federal.
