Terrible news from WYFF, the NBC station in Greenville, SC: Photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer and anchor Mike McCormick were out covering a storm today when a tree crushed their news van. Both men were killed.http://www.wyff4.com/article/wyff-news-4-anchor-photojournalist-tragically-killed-when-tree-falls-on-suv/20945002 …

Is it time to rethink sending people out to cover storms when you could do the same report from a safe location? Watching a reporter get knocked around by the winds is good TV but I don’t think it’s worth it. Couldn’t you just set up a camera?

Obviously my heart goes out to their family and friends. I just feel like we were setting this up

I never quite understand why reporters are out there in storms when they tell their viewers to stay indoors. It's too dangerous to send people into the eye of a storm.

Oh no! This is one of my regional stations - I've watched McCormick for years, and no doubt footage by Smeltzer. RIP, and condolences to their families and loved ones.
