I think you give the President (who is known to lie profusely and often) a pass when you call a lie a fib. I'm curious what do you consider a fib? The President denying a security expert's briefing is not a fib. That's a lie.

i think he "fibbed" when he said it was sunny during his inauguration speech, when in fact it was rainy. he either didn't know about the briefing (falsehood, etc) or he lied about it.

this is what my A block was all about today. IMHO, we should distinguish between different types of dishonesty. a 1 alarm fire versus a 5 alarm fire. i acknowledged that folks frequently disagree on which is whichhttps://www.cnn.com/videos/cnnmoney/2018/05/27/stelter-how-to-tell-when-trump-lies-rs-sot.cnn/video/playlists/reliable-sources-highlights/ …

Your view was represented on today's "Reliable." I'm surprised you don't see value in, say, distinguishing from a "dumb" misstatement and a disturbing, dangerous one. They're not all the same.

Nobody is asking you to “give up on nuance.” But when you lot can’t call out the obvious, demonstrable lies for what they are, then we think nuance is just a shield you’re hiding behind to insulate you from accountability.

When there's a constant stream of lies, I think we're in a different category entirely vs. a "normal" politician where a scale would actually be helpful/useful if they told ~1-2 "falsehoods a month. Where GOP latched onto Obama's "keep your doctor" statement for 10 years

@brianstelter the point she is trying to make is that the nuances do not matter. The president consistently lies & it does significant damage to the media’s credibility when they paint it as anything otherwise. A misleading statement is a lie, doesn’t matter if it’s a 1 or a 5.

All mistatements from the office of the President are dumb, disturbing, and dangerous. All of them. That they continue happening with no care for correction weights them more toward the latter two, though.

What Brian is saying may have held true w/nearly all other presidents, as they've all fibbed on occasion. But this president uses and test-runs fibs (relatively irrelevant untruths) as part of a larger scheme for more egregious lies. It's a strategy that needs to be dismantled.

Because that dumb misstatement is intentional. Do you not believe the President knows the difference between rain and shine? This is the media biggest issue. Looking for every reason to false objectivity to avoid pushback. Pushback is ok. Avoiding conflict isn’t your job.
