Going on CNN with @brianstelter to talk about Trump lying and false-claim-ing

I recognize that the "dumb" comments can still be destabilizing & make people feel like there's an assault on truth. but not everything Trump says is a lie. Let's not give up on nuance!
-
Nobody is asking you to “give up on nuance.” But when you lot can’t call out the obvious, demonstrable lies for what they are, then we think nuance is just a shield you’re hiding behind to insulate you from accountability.

Really well said!

When there's a constant stream of lies, I think we're in a different category entirely vs. a "normal" politician where a scale would actually be helpful/useful if they told ~1-2 "falsehoods a month. Where GOP latched onto Obama's "keep your doctor" statement for 10 years
-
Fair point
-
Obama's statement was an aspiration which he was advised was possible if improbable, and therefore, misleading.

@brianstelter the point she is trying to make is that the nuances do not matter. The president consistently lies & it does significant damage to the media’s credibility when they paint it as anything otherwise. A misleading statement is a lie, doesn’t matter if it’s a 1 or a 5. -
I understand nuance is important and often times critical when understanding context, but
@realDonaldTrump isn’t conversing in good faith when he conflates, for example, illegal immigrants with criminals.

All mistatements from the office of the President are dumb, disturbing, and dangerous. All of them. That they continue happening with no care for correction weights them more toward the latter two, though.

What Brian is saying may have held true w/nearly all other presidents, as they've all fibbed on occasion. But this president uses and test-runs fibs (relatively irrelevant untruths) as part of a larger scheme for more egregious lies. It's a strategy that needs to be dismantled.
-
You're playing by old rules that may have worked with others, but don't work with this guy.

This is the type of "distinction" that dysfunctional people use as cover. "It was just a glass of wine, not a fifth of bourbon," said the alcoholic. "I just shoved her against the wall, I didn't beat her," said the abuser.
-
The issue is the overall, persistent behavior, which is lying to the American public. Not the degree of untruth or unreality of each individual incident.

They are not all the same to you. But to
@realDonaldTrump base, the 40%, they are all the same. If he says it they believe it. Lies have become truth and truth has become lies. Your nuance is the knife you brought to a gun fight.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Brian, you're missing the nuance in Soledad's point: just as all lies are not equal, neither are all liars.

When it comes to him it’s all the same, calculated lies to mislead and keep his base.

Because that dumb misstatement is intentional. Do you not believe the President knows the difference between rain and shine? This is the media biggest issue. Looking for every reason to false objectivity to avoid pushback. Pushback is ok. Avoiding conflict isn’t your job.

You shouldn’t either. Doing so makes you complicit in misinforming Americans. Shame on you. Try doing your job.

When Obama said everyone would be able keep their doctors under ACA, that was a mistatement. I don't recall you pushing back on the GOP calling it a lie w/most of the MSM parroting GOP talking point. It was one of the things that drove down the initial dislike of Obamacare.

You help Trump & hurt America when you try to label his lies as something else.
