I think some criticism on left of colleagues like @maggieNYT is rooted in the frustration of not having any actual power in Washington right now, and few concrete ways of stopping or opposing Trump.

so you're denying that trump critics are frustrated with lack of actual power/ways to stop trump, and thus they challenge the press to be more aggressive on their behalf? you're denying that reality?

Brian, Maggie has absolutely made it a habit to normalize Trump and Trumpism. Even setting aside the issue of her refusing to say Trump "lies," she was right in front of defending NYT for the repeated glowing, normalizing profiles of Nazis & not getting why everyone was so upset.

And again, this is part of larger, deeply upsetting pattern where legacy media just circles the wagons while the digital media repeatedly yells at them for refusing to see what's right in front of them. Like repeatedly running glowing profiles of how Nazis Are Just Like Us.

Exactly. Perhaps if Maggie Haberman, and others at the NYT admitted their role in the 2016 election coverage, and acknowledge their failure to hold Donald Trump to not just the same standard as Hillary Clinton, but as every other presidential candidate in history... Alas ...

I’m saying using our frustration as a defense for not saying a lie is a lie is weak and pathetic. We have often complained about press coverage even when we had power. This is a deflection technique: oh now that they’re out of power they get so upset!

@brianstelter : ask yourself why the standard NYTer response to right-wing criticism is a servile knuckling under yet the standard NYTer response to non-RW criticism is to go ballistic. And be joined by other journos in the whole press omerta thing.

You’re willing to call that, objectively, a “reality”, but it’s too much to ask that we use the word lie for things that are objectively lies? I think people on the left are very concerned that the non-stop erosion of norms is straining our democracy.

Even if the Dems held congress, we would still need the press to call out lies by people like trump. We held the Presidency in 2016 and still needed you to do it then. You have a UNIQUE role that is critical to our democracy, and it is being tested. We want you to rise to meet it

I think a lot of people are frustrated by the lack of actual power being caused in part by how the press covered Trump in 2016, and the seeming continuation of those policies without any self-reflection.

No. People are frustrated that Trump lying to promote his agenda is presented as a whoopsie poopsie. Even when presented with the truth he refuses to retract or correct his statement. And te press still claims whoopsie poopsie. That is dishonest.
