Furloughed Fed. When I called my landlord during the 2013 shutdown I got a 30 minute lecture on how I was a sponge off the taxpayer & my rent was still due. Have to make another call on Monday. Sigh.....

My Wife & I are living in Waikiki, self employed govt contractors. Due to having UNPAID INVOICES of money owed us we are now behind on rent, bills, and running out of food with about $80 left to our names.

  6. You have to live in some kind of fantasy land to think that people can survive week by week without their regular paycheck. And you have to be even more delusional to think landlords will show any leniency as it relates to the rent being due. These guys are out of touch.

Bumping this up in everyone's timeline: That is correct, Brian! You, me, and every other senator voted to keep the government open.

  10. Seems POTUS has broad authority under the National Emergencies Act to undertake military construction projects if a national emergency is declared. So the question is not whether he is in possession of this power but rather whether it ought to be used this way.

While many federal workers go without pay and the government is partially shut down, hundreds of senior Trump political appointees — including Mike Pence — are poised to receive annual raises of about $10,000 a year, WaPo reports.

  13. The story of this Presidency is perfectly embodied by most federal workers having a 1.9 percent pay increase cancelled by the President himself, and fat raises for those at the top. It’s not about optics - it’s actually about how they view money. They think it’s theirs.

That's to say nothing of IRS being unable to process refunds.

I think Trump's theory is Dems care about the functioning of government and he doesn't so he can wait them out through a long shutdown. That's wrong -- if essential workers stop showing up, voters across the spectrum will care about what's not working. Air travel is Exhibit A.

The scenes from the House floor today felt like a glimpse of the country that most of us thought we were before 2016, and the one that we still might be.
