Only in the closest of elections. 2016 would have been called for Clinton within a few days of election night if not on election night itself

I just worry about Bush v. Gore x 50.

In the one election in living memory where the popular vote was really in question much beyond election day there were some....other problems quite specific to the electoral college
-
I worry about 2 things: one a really close election w/50 Bush v. Gores. But also a legitimacy crisis if a Republican leads on election night even if people like us know that there are huge chunks of the vote still out in places like CA, AZ, and NY.

Yes. In California we already have to wait on some state election results because we take the time to count the votes.
-
That’s a function of your incompetent mail-in ballot system. Not because you are taking time to count votes. Most places count the huge majority in a night.

So a national recount would obviously be much worse than the FL only recount, and remember that it takes California for-freaking-ever to count votes the first time, it just doesn't matter now because you know who will get the majority on election night (well before really).

I also can't imagine it being workable without nationalizing the election itself. Having different voting systems across the states would exacerbate that nightmare, and might not be constitutional without the EC.
