I don't think I'm alone in finding that shared virtual spaces are compelling (sometimes more so than video) even when I'm not in an HMD - so I wrote about that! 📝 My latest post on the blog is live:

Turns out global pandemic is a great opportunity to focus more on side projects. I made , an ephemeral link shortener which makes links that are easy to remember and type, and expire in 5 minutes. Great for WebVR sites on standalones like the Oculus Quest.

Nonetheless, the visceral effect it had on me was quite unsettling. My desire for an open-source, non-profit voice assistant has increased by fifty points. I draft this tweet, head back on pillow, trying to forget what just happened, pretending I don't live in a boring dystopia.

Maybe I'm too cynical. Chances are this was a faceless algorithm carrying out its programming to interject cutesy suggestions into relevant assistant interactions. Maybe it wasn't actually due to bags of money changing hands to broaden the reach of these brands. Right, right?

WHAT?! I'm suddenly yanked out of my semi-sleep because the technological ether has just turned a moment of my life into a product placement segment. Now I'm wide awake because my mind is reeling about late-stage capitalism and Black Mirror references. Thanks .

Just then I remember I don't want to sleep in too long the next morning. "Hey Google, set an alarm" ... "Okay, alarm set for 9 AM". But then, something unexpected; "Next time", says the assistant, "try setting a Lego alarm, or a Hatchimals alarm"...

The smart bulbs in my apartment blink off in quick succession, the smart IR-transmitter turns my TV off. It's dark now. A brief appreciation for the ambient tech flits through my mind. Head hits pillow, brain receives all the cues it needs to fall asleep, sweet bliss takes hold.

I had a rather disturbing interaction with my Google Home Assistant last night. Picture this: It's been a long day, I've just finished my last task for the night and I'm winding down, ready for some much needed sleep. "Hey Google, lights out"...

Hotmail spam filters have been broken all day today. Thousands, if not millions, of people's inboxes are being inundated. Pretty sad to see non-savvy folks being affected by a failure in a crucial means of communication.

Yesterday mentioned that I've been working on a fancy, forward-compatible library for animating and interacting with motion controllers. I'm happy to say you can now check out the sample page! It even works in VR!
