Isn’t “self-identification” unhelpful in that it implies it’s an entirely voluntary choice? People aren’t deciding who they are - they are acknowledging what their identity is, accepting what their mind is dictating to them, wanting recognition of their true identity.

Female fetuses aren't aborted on the basis of their personalities, "true identities" or what their minds involuntarily dictate.... --acid attacks, FGM, corrective rape of lesbians, gay bashing. These are all sex based phenomena and shouldn't be sanitized.

I’m not suggesting eradicating sex, for the reasons you indicate, & for political reasons I’m nervous about using gender (seen by many as conformity to norms devised by a misogynistic patriarchal society) as an alternative. It’s complicated & I’m feeling my way.

I see you block idiocy. Let me return the compliment.

Please remember you are in a place of comfort and privilege as a man weighing in on this. You could not fathom the amount of abuse and gaslighting these women get. I've been watching this for a little over a year and a half it gets worse every day.

Gay magazine shows solidarity with heterosexual "male lesbians" today over lesbians outraged at this assault on reality and contribution to their erasure. If this were men, you wouldn't waste time on fun little anecdotes and hypotheticals.https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/05/03/trans-lib-dem-sarah-brown-twitter-trans-abuse/ …

This is the Sarah Brown who invited a man to "suck my formaldehyde-pickled balls"? Here is the victim's measured response to the horrific trolling crybully Aunt Sarah subjected him to ~ http://www.rtaylor.co.uk/formaldehyde-pickled-balls.html …

Sorry Brian but people can identify as they wish. but legal protections are not about identity, they are about material realities that are measurable in some way. Can I get a blue badge for parking because I identify as disabled.? No, rightly I cannot.
-
No but you can get a birth certificate that shows a different sex than the one you were born with and you are then entitled to the legal protections that go with that.
-
1. Yes but my point is, that to get a blue badge I would have to be disabled and there are measurable criteria for what would constiute a disability. Self id means that a person can change their birth certificate with no measurable criteria.
-
2. And the bigger problem is that ANYONE could then use a sex protected space, whether or not they have changed their birth certificate. It would be hardly be reasonable to genuine transexuals or to women, to expect them to ask ppl using these spaces for a birth certificate.
-
How could anyone do that then and not now?
-
If legislation changes to allow self id the existing criteria will not be needed. I have worked with predatory men (Probation/Social Services) and can assure you that some of them will use any ooporunity to predate on women. That is why women want sex protected spaces.

1/n I believe it is arguable that identity is in the mind. We have absolutely no idea to what extent our biology and our life experience influences our identity. It is pretty much a philosophical argument and as such is highly subjective. How can someone who is biologically male

2/n ...know that he is actually a woman? I do not doubt that trans women believe that they are actual women but, at the end of the day, that's what it is, a belief and to legislate for that belief, to me, is dangerous. You may as well legislate for the existence of God...

3/n ...You cannot rely on people just saying they are the opposite sex and then expect everyone to believe it. What if they're not sure? What if they're not serious? I will give you two examples. The first is
@grrlalex have a look at this interview of Alex.. -
Tell me, are they serious? Are they joking? Who knows? Only Alex does. It is entirely possible they are not serious. But I would have to treat them as a woman even if I thought they weren't serious. I will now give you another example from personal experience.

6/n ...I was teaching a course in filmmaking to young people, along with 2 other male filmmakers. One of the students, a girl I will call Jill, had come up with a story about an actress who experienced sexism and misogyny at the hands of casting directors...

and the Weinstein thing). It was an absolutely fantastic idea which focussed on a character who had decided to take a stand against misogyny and call it out and I, as a woman, was very moved by the story... -
8/n ..So the students began developing it. Now, one of the other students on the course was a young person who I will call Trish. Trish was a young man who, I was told, identified as a woman. Trish made no attempt to look like a woman. The only concession Trish had made to...
