Properly fund & resource Policing & support pro active police work to prevent this type of crime. Policing is now reactive as opposed to pro active for many offences. Blame lies with govt & previous home secretary & current one. Effective deterrent as well at court!https://twitter.com/LBC/status/948088011304075264 …

Community policing must be restored to: 1. Secure community trust & confidence leading to more intelligence on knife carriers & terrorism 2. Provide visible reassurance, deterrence & feeling of safety, deterring knife carrying/reducing belief you need a knife to ensure own safety

And the relaxing of S1 Stop and Search has probably contributed to the increase of knife crime as offenders know the chances of getting searched is lowered

Interesting this one because intuitively you think this to be the case but ex-offenders laughed when I said it. They now hide their weapons nearby so they won't get caught or they give them to their girlfriends/baby mothers to carry, apparently.

Fair point about hiding them but still need effective deterrent & intell led stop & searches.

When I was covering crime in London - two boroughs in particular - Newham and Tower Hamlets back in the late 90s early 2000s we had these things; but mostly I remember the hard hitting campaign the Met did with the pictures of the consequences...blame lies with May and Rudd today

Tower hamlets particularly had an excellent pro active team linked to the neighbourhood teams. Op Ashford & they knew their active criminals & gathered intell. It worked but some academic bosses disliked it - not enough graphs or pie charts produced!

Yes they did. I was often out with the Bethnal Green team covering things. I was there mostly in the days when Mark Simmons was Borough Commander. I came in at the end of the Rose Fitzpatrick era

That was the era but after Rose left & the others it all changed.

The one thing I really remember was having to build the relationships up. I was lucky because I was new but there was a distinct lack of trust ~ my boss at the paper said I was taking a poison chalice but I loved it. That’s why I’m so for police & @metpoliceuk etc
