Am I the only one who finds this massively disappointing? On so many levels.https://twitter.com/brianpaddick/status/946451015603249153 …

A theory is based on evidence. This is a hypothesis. I suppose it depends on what type of violence you’re interested in. Violence in the home unlikely to be affected either way by police in the streets.
-
One way to test your hypothesis is to look at whether violent crime was low in at a time where police presence high.
@gmhales might know of some research on this. -
I’m interested in the anecdotal evidence you mention though - can you elaborate?
-
We had a meeting with young people about knife crime. All said they felt less safe on the streets & believed they needed to carry knives to protect themselves. One, who’d recently been released from Holloway said seeing SNT officers made her feel safer (she saw the irony)
-
Agreed some young people carry knives because they feel unsafe - plenty of evidence for that. It doesn't follow from what you've said that more police on the streets make those young people - or others - feel safer though. And feeling unsafe is not the same as being unsafe.
-
But they young people I spoke to said seeing Safer Neighbourhood officers made them feel safer. Not scentific I admit but worth pursuing.
-
Ok then - you just didn't say that in your earlier tweet. It's worth pursuing, I agree - perceptions of safety can be as important as actual safety. But the idea that increased crime is a result of decreased police presence does not follow from that.
-
I think you’ll find I did. However, I am saying there has been an increase in ‘public space’ crime as a result of withdrawal of police presence not a general increase in crime because of fewer police.

My word this has made me think, it’s an interesting theory. As someone who pounded the beat for 9 years I was never really convinced it made a huge difference either in preventing crime or ‘reassuring’ the public. One negative press report could wipe out hours of diligent patrol
