I’ve a confession to make. Post-referendum I didn’t care that much if we left the EU - it’s nowhere near perfect. Now I realise the damage it will cause. Some will be short-term, hitting the poorest hardest, some, in terms of global status, we will never completely recover from.

Understand, and agree both campaigns were woeful. For different reasons. But much of what is becoming widely evident now was clearly warned of pre-ref. One of the strange things for me is the surprise being expressed now. Thank you for responding.

-
The big 1 4 me is how people are surprised about the NI border.
-
Totally agree. John Major bless him was *so* vocal about this pre-ref, even did a wee walk across the border with Blair
(bet that was painful
). JM seemed like he really cared.
-
John Major warned about the war in Iraq. He gave the reasons. He was proved right John Major is warning about leaving the EU. He has given the reasons. He is right again.
-
John Major is way too underappreciated
-
We're conditioned to appreciate con artistry
-
John Major was just before the Spin Era.

nothing that is happening now was not predicted by the
#remain side -
I agree. I was arguing all this stuff with the Brexits straight after the referendum with support from
@Ferretgrove and shortly after with@ComradePangloss. All predictable, especially after the 2016 Tory conference pretty well confirmed worst case scenario. -
It’s extremely frustrating. Especially when Leavers accuse you of taking delight in it. There’s no delight guys. Zero. But I’ll be damned if I’ll shut up while Leavers express shock about things we were accused of over dramatizing last year.

They were flawed for entirely different reasons. The Leave campaign was 100% lies. The remain campaign was doomed because UK remain politicians had spent previous years/decades lying about & scapegoating the EU. They'd have had to admit to lying. A total failure of education.
-
You’re so right. And the entirely unsophisticated, patronising approach that was used in the indyref ... without any real and clear attempts to counter Leave lies. It was a pathetic attempt. Turned voters off. Cameron and his crew were a disgrace on all fronts.

Both campaigns were awful but absolutely nothing new has become known that was not known before the referendum. Can you give an example of one thing that is known now that was not known then?
-
The general public were, and in many cases still are, ignorant. When people don't engage, are uneducated on the subject and subject to relentless xenophobic anti-EU rhetoric, that results in ignorance. The facts were always available, but people believed they already knew them.
-
People voted Leave for crazy reasons. There was a tweet from LB yesterday of a phone in. The guy starts with 2I am not racist but.." Then goes on to say he voted Leave because too many Indians & Pakistanis worked in his local supermarket
-
Plenty of racist / xenophobic excuses for voting leave. Many Nationalist excuses given, which are much the same as xenophobic. No genuine economic reasons. No evidence examples of harm of EU. . No mention or knowledge from leavers of the real, tangible benefits of the EU.

The problem is that we acted wirhout any facts or even a concept.

It is a sad fact those that voted Brexit maintain they were correct whatever evidence they see that it will be damaging for the country.

You can’t equate the deliberate campaign of lies (openly admitted to by Arron Banks the day after the referendum)of the Leave campaign with the range of warnings offered by the Remain campaign.
