Please explain. EU citizens cannot be stopped from entering Ireland (free movement of people) & if no border, they can then go to Northern Ireland & from there to the rest of the UK. So how do we stop uncontrolled EU immigration through Ireland after Brexit? Asking for a friend.

So Irish customs dont do that currently? Im strting to feel sorry for Irish customs gettng a bad rap for assumed utter incompetance at controlling their external borders. Smthng like 200 illegals got thru in 2015, and most were then pickd up cross country. This is a non-issue.

Free movement of people means EU citizens have...free movement. Checks of EU citizens at internal borders (including at U.K. border & Irish border) consists of checking ID against travel document (usually electronically) i.e. does this passport belong to this person. End of.

(unless individual flagged for crime/terrorism, of course)

Which is exactly what Ireland currently do.

If they intend to work illegally then they’ll just lie and they won’t need to go via Ireland. Most overstayers who do that in the uk even on a visa don’t sneaks in they walk in and fib when asked. Why would that change?

My tip of the day, cross at Calais for your shopping trip, its cheaper and far easier than sailing round to Dublin, travelling up country, crossing from Belfast to Holyhead then head south to London. Eurostar gets you there in an hour.

Overstaying and working illegally will always be an issue, just as it is now. The hand that feeds is being cut off.
