Please explain. EU citizens cannot be stopped from entering Ireland (free movement of people) & if no border, they can then go to Northern Ireland & from there to the rest of the UK. So how do we stop uncontrolled EU immigration through Ireland after Brexit? Asking for a friend.

No, it’s called checking ID. Just like we have to show ID if you want to fly from London to Manchester
-
Precisely.
-
There are currently no ID checks on ferries between the rest of the U.K. and Northern Ireland. I think you need to check with the DUP if they’re happy for that to be introduced.
-
Or we just wait 5 years and the next government can introduce them
-
You seem to think that it’s only a DUP problem and not a deeply-held view that effectively putting a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. I order to avoid putting a border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic is totally unacceptable.
-
Give us an alternative then? They are two separate countries but have decided they did not want a border in the Island of Ireland which has been respected. They now have to compromise and respect we need checks somewhere
-
You don’t understand. There is no alternative and I do not have to come up with one because I believe the whole U.K. should stay in the Customs Union and the Single Market. Your move. Or is it checkmate?
-
So why ask the question for 'your friend'? And it's not check mate at all. The country voted to leave the EU. If that means we need to perform passenger ID checks on ferries from Northern Ireland, then that's what we do.
