Gavin Hales added,
Youngsters told me recently ‘selling drugs is the only way to make good money’. Prison seen as an easily coped-with occupational hazard. EITHER multiagency attack on drug supply routes from source to street (huge resources rqd) OR take drugs out of criminals hands (huge receipts)
Exactly the battle I had when trying to divert YP’s away from this lifestyle into a meaningful career Brian. I had success but was a challenge and not frequent.
40 hours at a check-out in Tesco or 4 hours selling drugs. Is that grooming or economics?
Factor in the risks and associated costs of the drugs economy, including violence, arrests, indebtedness, imprisonment, future prospects, and the wage premium may not look as attractive. >
If you haven't already, do read 'why do drug dealers live with their moms' in Freakonomics, for a fully costed assessment (from the US)
That only works for the kids who have 'moms' Gavin - many of them in care or sofa surfing. I've met plenty of boys who sell to drugs to provide for their families and younger siblings.
Unfortunately those risks - great as they seem to us - are often accepted by young people who see no other option. Their expectations are prison or an early death 'it is what it is'.
Society gives us nothing, so why obey its rules? (Different moral framework —> drug dealing OK.) Insatiable desire for drugs in UK (demand reduction not working). Only effective supply reduction strategy is to take out supply chain from source to street (insufficient resources.)
I'm in full agreement. I would also suggest production of some drugs should be within reach of start ups (properly licensed), to put legitimate money back into communities.
