We need the police & communities to work together so that stop & search can be accurately targeted at those actually carrying knives. That needs community policing & intelligence, which has been devastated by the Government’s cuts to police budgets. https://hansard.parliament.uk/Lords/2018-11-05/debates/DBB3D158-2820-485D-B995-51736767A0C4/KnifeCrime#contribution-F10F3B3A-17C9-4175-8B95-4D73536E2353 …

Thats true but more important is why they carry knives? Has anyone asked them? I asked them way back in the 1980 and they said then that they didn't feel safe. Okay keep your hair on police tweeters I know that some have them to commit crime but many are scared.

I’ve asked them. Lack of visible policing presence makes them feel unsafe. Territorial & drugs gangs use knives as enforcement. Others feel they need them as defence, never thinking they’d use them but if you lose control, next thing it’s in someone’s ribs. Confiscate & reassure.

It's always entertaining to ask anti-police critics how and who needs to keep kids safe in public space if it's not the police doing, er, police type stuff like asking questions & S&S...

Increase intel led stop and search as part of a wider strategy with more open support from @NPCC and senior officers. Supported by #BWC will remove the fear of complaints. Issue, not enough cops to do stop and search as demand keeps rising.

Stop Search and Weapon sweeps are short term solutions to a long term problem. Knives are quite rightly easy to obtain (every kitchen top drawer in the country) so we have to accept that all stop search can do is temperarily deter and delay the inevitable.

Which is why addressing the underlying issues is so important... But it is medium to long term... More policing of public space is the ONLY short term answer. And it is an essential part of the long term one too.

Exactly this. Need for virtuous circles: strong relationships with communities, information shared and seen to be acted on, targeting the right people, enhancing safety, building trust and confidence.

My impression is that Trident went some way to achieving this in its original form, which was after all developed in part at the behest of local communities.

The mantra of ‘intelligence led’ is becoming a cliché. There will hardly ever be intelligence to say that ‘A’ is carrying a knife now. Good old fashioned policing where officers know who the likely lads are and then S&S the life out of them is the way. And no, I’m not a dinosaur!
